On the way to Queenstown we stopped at an old mine that has been preserved as a historical site. The tour guide that explained the operation of the Monitor and the stamp mill actually worked this mine with his father in the 1960s. It had been abandoned. It’s a placer operation, but since the area only gets 3” of rain a year, there are two ponds above to provide water for the Monitor (big fire hose nozzle kind of thing that blasts the hillside), but once the water was gone, the mining was done for the year.

Living quarters for the Chinese. There were over 4000 in NZ during the gold rush. They were mostly all men, so I don't know where they've all come from since then.
