The Greenstone River

In an earlier post I talked about the Department of Conservation (DoC) trail and hut system. We finally decided to wander off into the woods and take a look. We decided on the Greenstone River which is a five hour hike (unless you are Lance Armstrong). The Greenstone River is a world class fly fishing water where rich Americans get helicoptered into. I was looking forward to getting a crack at it. Unfortunately, at the last minute I learned that because of their international renown, the Greenstone, Caples and upper Lochy rivers require a back country fishing licence, (and in February reservations are actually required) which I did not have. Sucks to be me. There was an Australian staying in the hut when we got there. He had been there for eight days. The day before he had caught 15 fish, all averaging about four pounds. I am planning to go back, but the weather is in the toilet again.
