November 22, Hokitika to Westport
The storm was passing so we made plans to head north towards Karamea. We had driven as far south on the west coast as we could, now we wanted to do the same north. You can actually drive to the Heaphy Track trailhead which is several kilometers farther north than Karamea.
The weather was fine when we left Hokitika and we headed north along the coast. We stopped at a place called the "Pancake Rocks". There's a nesting tern colony there so I had to take a few pictures. Also, this place is famous for "The Blowhole". At high tide, and especially with rough seas there is a flume that shoots water up a hundred feet in the sir. As usual for us, it was low tide and the water was not flat but not raging either. So no blow hole. Didn't diminish the number of buses in the lot though.
On the way in to Westport we decided to head out to Cape Foulwind. The book says that the place got it's name from James Cook who was bashed about at anchor for two days due to bad winds. However, I think that it's probably more likely that it got it's name from the stench generated by the seal colony.
After the seal colony we settled in to our little hovel for the night:
