After we came back down from our adventures in Karamea, we decided to overnight in Westport...again. We decided to stay at the same holiday park as before since the folks were very nice. We even got our old room back. These units were very nice. Recently redone with all new beds and furniture. Nice and quiet. Plus the unit that we looked at at the beach with another holiday park smelled like urine.
The "book" had this to say about a restaurant on Tuaranga Bay called The Bayhouse Cafe':
"One of New Zealand's best restaurants, The Bayhouse Cafe' is sophisticated without being stuffy. The chefs use local ingredients like piko piko (fern shoots) and horopito (New Zealand Peppertree) in preparing seafood, west coast venison and Canterbury lamb. The wine list is easily the best on the West Coast".
After Karamea we decided we needed a little splurging so headed out to Cape Foulwind...again.
When we got there there was a great sign that said it was all closed but we could buy it if we wanted. Major disappointment. The storm from the day before was just getting worked out so I at least got a few pictures.
On our way back to the holiday park we saw an excellent example of kiwi patriotism (or All Black admiration). The Silver Fern frond is a New Zealand national emblem.
Someone had gone to a lot of effort to put up their firewood, cheer for Queen and Country and root on the All Blacks all in one:
Continuing back to town we remembered it was Thanksgiving so decided to celebrate by buying one of those roasted chickens you see in the grocery store. You know, the ones that have been stewing in their own juices for the last 12 hours. The ones you don't have to chew...just sort of mash the meat against the roof of your mouth and call it good.
Also, we couldn't find any of our own "Lawson's Dry Hills" wine so we got the next best thing. Chinese I think...
