Weka
The Weka is a flightless bird about the size of a chicken. The early settlers called them woodhens. I'm guessing they pretty much taste like chicken. They are very inquisitive and pilfer things. They can be a pest. They like to take things and run off into the bush to examine their plunder. The trick is not to chase them but just watch where they go and a little later go pick up your stuff.
They were all over the west coast. Not the least of which were road kill. They seemed to hang out any place they thought they might get a hand out. I don't typically go in for feeding the wildlife, but I needed to perform an experiment. Weka can't fly, but can they jump?
